Aromatherapy

Have you ever noticed how smell impacts you?

The feeling you get when the seasons change and the smell in the air differs.

Catching that scent of a familiar perfume which takes you to a memory of a loved one.

Walking into an aroma which feels like a comforting hug and calms you.

Have you ever given attention to how much you can tell from smell?

That smell in the air just before it rains.

That whiff you get when you go to prepare food, and you just know that you should not be putting that in your body.

That waft from the kitchen that indicates that you should take something out of the oven before it burns.

Our sense of smell is powerful, it protects us, it comforts us, it warns us, it nourishes us.

We get cues, ordinarily subconsciously, but have you ever thought about how you can make your sense of smell work for you?

In the search for serenity, have you thought about how you can use that smell which brings you comfort or calm to bring you peace in a time of high stress?

I had no idea how powerful my sense of smell was until I was in a situation where a smell impacted me so negatively that my nervous system pretty much shut down.

I felt my body go into a state of shock; I was paralysed.

I did not feel regulated until I had showered, bathed and changed my clothes.

It took hours to remove the smell from my nostrils, and once I had I felt so much better.

As I was reflecting on what had happened to me, I flipped the experience and had a lightbulb moment!

If smell can impact me so negatively, how can I use my ability to smell to have a positive impact?

And so, my journey of experimentation with scents began.

It is not an onerous experiment; it is one which can actually be quite fun and one which you have probably already started without consciously realising!

I would guess you already have a few favourite scents, perfumes or aftershaves.

A variety which you select according to your mood.

This is just an extension of that practice, but in a mindful and conscious way, to get the most benefit from your sense of smell and this section of my website is here to throw out different ideas and ways you can play. Enjoy!
